The Slippery Slope of a Blank Canvas
Back in 2021, when my wife Natasha and I purchased our first home, we were confronted with a daunting challenge – a brand new build with a garden that was a veritable blank canvas. Instead of settling for a lackluster landscape, we decided to take on the task of transforming this uneven, clay-filled plot into a vibrant and personalized oasis. Little did we know the adventure that lay ahead!
As self-proclaimed garden enthusiasts, Natasha and I were determined to create a space that would not only be visually stunning but also offer a sense of whimsy and exploration. Our goal? Conquering the Clay Conundrum
The first hurdle we faced was the heavy, dense clay soil that had us questioning our sanity. Digging through this stubborn earth by hand was akin to chipping away at solid rock, and we quickly realized that we needed some heavy-duty assistance. That’s when we enlisted the help of a trusty micro-digger, which proved to be a game-changer.
As we learned from our research, the key to conquering the clay was to have a well-thought-out plan. By marking out the area with a spray can and strategically digging from the lowest point towards the house, the micro-digger was able to do the heavy lifting, leaving us to focus on the finer details.
Mastering the Retaining Wall
With the ground leveled, it was time to tackle the heart of our project – the retaining wall. This task required a delicate balance of precision and problem-solving, as we wanted to ensure the structure’s stability and longevity. Enlisted the help of my neighbor, Billy, and my father, we followed a step-by-step process that involved setting the fence posts, securing the wood boards, and waterproofing the wall with a polythene lining.
One of the key insights we gained from our research was the importance of building the wall in a U-shape, as this would dramatically improve its strength. We also learned the value of using the right-sized drill bits and coach bolts to ensure a secure connection between the posts and boards.
Stepping into the Spotlight
With the retaining wall in place, it was time to turn our attention to the star of the show – the statement stepping stones. Determined to create a path that would both be functional and visually striking, we opted for a slightly unconventional approach.
Rather than setting the stones in concrete, we chose to dig shallow holes and fill them with building sand. This not only allowed for a more eco-friendly solution but also provided the flexibility to easily replace any stones in the future if needed. As our research suggested, this method has proven to be surprisingly sturdy, with the stones showing no signs of movement even after a harsh winter.
Cultivating a Sensory Delight

Turning our attention to the wall area, we focused on low-growing, textural plants that would soften the harsh edges. Dwarf Japanese Anemones and Geraniums in shades of pink and purple were the stars of the show, complemented by the deep red Heucheras and the lush ferns that thrived in the shadier spots.
As we ventured down the path, the garden took on a more woodland-inspired feel, with the addition of Brunnera’s dainty blue flowers and the striking Hydrangeas that clung to the fence, providing a sheltered haven for the birds. Just as we had learned from our research, the strategic placement of logs and the careful selection of hardy, perennial plants ensured that our garden would be a true four-season wonder.
The Finishing Touches
With the planting complete, we decided to add a few final touches to truly elevate our tiered garden. A custom-built pallet bench, nestled at the bottom of the path, provided the perfect spot for us to sit and admire our handiwork. To keep the area weed-free and visually appealing, we laid down weed membrane and covered it with decorative bark, creating a natural and low-maintenance aesthetic.
As the icing on the cake, we installed a set of solar-powered strip lights around the top of the retaining wall, adding a touch of enchantment to our garden oasis, especially during the evenings.

As we look back on our journey, it’s hard to believe that what was once a blank canvas is now a vibrant, multi-layered garden that captivates all who set foot in it.
