Reclaiming Urban Oases: Turning Tiny Spaces into Outdoor Havens

As an avid gardener and designer, I’ve always been fascinated by the challenge of transforming small, urban lots into lush, inviting outdoor spaces. It’s like solving a puzzle – taking a compact canvas and coaxing out its full potential to create a tranquil retreat, right in the heart of the bustling city.

Let me share with you the stories of two such urban gardens that I had the pleasure of designing, each one a testament to the power of creative thinking and an ecological approach.

Cultivating an Oasis in Jamaica Plain

Picture this: a 30-by-31-foot backyard, once a simple parking area, transformed into a vibrant urban garden. This was the task my clients in Jamaica Plain had entrusted me with, and let me tell you, it was no small feat.

These clients were passionate about growing their own vegetables, herbs, and fruits, and had already constructed numerous raised beds atop the asphalt. But their vision went beyond just edible plants – they also wanted a space where their young son could play, a spot for relaxation, and even a place to park a car for visiting relatives.

As the team at Eco-Landscape suggests, the key was to prioritize and focus on the most important elements, while finding creative ways to satisfy multiple needs.

We started by removing the asphalt, a daunting but necessary task. The soil beneath was tested and found to be contaminated, so we replaced it with a deep layer of nutrient-rich compost. This not only provided a healthy foundation for the edible plants but also allowed for the introduction of native species, like the stunning Crataegus viridis ‘Winter King’ tree and Aronia arbutifolia shrubs.

To maximize the usable space, we strategically placed a compact gravel parking area, a narrow fence to provide privacy, and a shed for storing the trash and recycling bins. The shed’s orientation, with doors opening onto the driveway, created an extra little nook for a trellis or flowers.

A small circular patio in the center of the garden offered a cozy spot to sit and admire the lush surroundings, while also providing easy access for wheeling the family’s bicycles to the bulkhead.

The end result was a harmonious blend of productivity, functionality, and beauty – a true urban oasis that exceeded the clients’ expectations. And the best part? By embracing an ecological approach, we were able to create a thriving, sustainable landscape that nourished both the family and the local ecosystem.

Navigating the Compact Backyard in Brookline

If the Jamaica Plain garden was a symphony, the Brookline backyard was a carefully choreographed dance. Hemmed in by the house, a neighboring brick wall, and an existing deck, this space presented a unique set of challenges.

As the Eco-Landscape article points out, urban gardens often have “micro-micro-climates” – pockets of varying sun exposure and temperature that can influence plant selection and placement.

In this case, I worked closely with the clients to identify these hidden gems, like the spot tucked against the new covered porch that received just the right amount of dappled sunlight. By capitalizing on these micro-climates, I was able to expand the planting palette and create a cohesive, visually appealing design.

The main challenge here was improving the entry experience. The original walkway and deck were in disrepair, and the main door the family used regularly was hidden behind a fence and tree. I crafted a more direct path, leading to a new porch with a roof to shelter the residents from rain and snow.

To add visual interest and functionality, I incorporated a mix of native and non-native shrubs and groundcovers, like Clethra alnifolia for its fragrance, Asarum canadense for its striking foliage, and Sagina subulata between the large stepping stones of the new garden path.

The rounded shape of the patio also created intriguing nooks and corners, perfect for tucking in additional plantings. And the use of New England-style stepping stones allowed for natural drainage and more opportunities for ground cover integration.

While this project is still a work in progress, with plans for a new deck and play area in the future, the transformed backyard has already become a beloved outdoor sanctuary for the family – a peaceful haven amidst the urban hustle and bustle.
