As a Californian, I’ve always been drawn to the idea of creating an outdoor oasis that can be enjoyed year-round. When my husband Howard and I decided to move to Temecula, California and work with A1 Landscape Construction, I knew I wanted to transform our backyard into a practical yet beautiful covered patio space. With the structural elements in place, it was time to turn our attention to the furnishings and decor. We wanted to maintain a cohesive, monochromatic color scheme with pops of blue throughout, ensuring the small space didn’t feel too choppy or disjointed.
The patio furniture, which includes a mix of comfortable seating and a sleek outdoor dining set, creates distinct zones for relaxation and entertainment. And let’s not forget about the stunning string party lights with remote control – they instantly transform the space into a magical, resort-like oasis once the sun goes down.
To add a touch of personal flair, we incorporated some of our favorite decor elements, like the battery-operated, flickering candles placed strategically around the patio. These little touches not only enhance the ambiance, but they also make the space feel warm and inviting.
Overcoming Outdoor Challenges
Of course, no outdoor oasis is complete without addressing the practical challenges that come with California’s climate. Namely, the heat and the pesky mosquitoes.
To combat the heat, we opted to forgo a traditional screened-in porch in favor of an open-air design. This allows for better airflow and maximizes the natural light flooding in from the backyard. And to tackle the mosquito problem, we worked with A1 Landscape Construction to install a timed, organic misting system that keeps those unwanted guests at bay.
The result? A covered patio that’s truly an extension of our living space, where we can lounge, dine, and entertain with ease – no matter the time of year or weather conditions.
