Less Lawn, More WOW with Groundcovers and Hardscapes

Goodbye, Boring Lawn – Hello, Lush and Lovely Alternatives!

As a landscape designer, I’ve always been perplexed by the obsession with vast, monotonous swaths of lawn. Sure, they provide a nice neutral backdrop, but in my opinion, they’re about as inspiring as a blank canvas. Where’s the character? The intrigue? The sense of connection to the natural world? I much prefer landscapes that make me stop in my tracks and say, “Wow!”

That’s why I’m so excited to share with you some of the fantastic alternatives to traditional lawns that I’ve discovered. From drought-tolerant groundcovers to creative hardscaping solutions, there are so many ways to transform your outdoor space into a lush, eye-catching oasis. And the best part? Many of these options require far less maintenance and water than your average grass lawn.

Groundcovers: The Unsung Heroes of the Landscape

One of my favorite lawn alternatives is the humble groundcover. These low-growing, spreading plants can add texture, color, and year-round interest to your garden, all while requiring a fraction of the care that a lawn demands. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m particularly fond of using groundcovers to create a sense of flow and connectivity throughout the landscape.

Take, for example, the delicate, mat-forming Geranium ‘Biokovo’. With its pretty pink flowers and evergreen foliage, this tough little plant is perfectly suited for planting around the base of trees, where its shallow roots won’t compete with the tree’s thirsty rootzone. Or consider the vibrant, trailing Thymus serpyllum (Creeping Thyme) – its fragrant, purple-hued blooms and dense, cushiony growth make it an ideal choice for filling in areas between stepping stones or along pathways.

And let’s not forget about the versatile and eye-catching Sedum Angelina. This succulent groundcover boasts bright golden-yellow foliage that transforms into rich, bronze tones in the fall, creating a stunning seasonal display. It’s drought-tolerant, deer-resistant, and can even tolerate light foot traffic – making it a fantastic living “mulch” in low-maintenance areas of the landscape.

Hardscaping: The Unsung Heroes of the Landscape

Of course, groundcovers aren’t the only way to liven up a tired, lawn-dominated landscape. Hardscaping elements like paths, patios, and dry creek beds can also play a starring role in creating a captivating outdoor oasis. And the best part? Many hardscaping materials require far less upkeep than a traditional lawn.

Take, for example, the timeless beauty of a meandering flagstone path. Not only does it add visual interest and a sense of movement to the landscape, but it also eliminates the need for mowing and watering in that particular area. Or consider the versatility of a decomposed granite patio – it’s a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant alternative to water-hungry grass that can still provide ample space for outdoor dining and entertaining.

And let’s not forget about the ecological benefits of incorporating features like dry creek beds into your landscape design. Not only do they add visual interest and help to manage stormwater runoff, but they can also serve as a haven for local wildlife, providing essential habitat and food sources.
