Unlocking the Secrets of Deck Design: Transforming Your Backyard into an Oasis

Last year, my family and I decided to take on the project of extending our backyard deck to expand our outdoor living space. We had built a lovely deck with a chevron pattern a few years prior, complete with flower beds lining our stone retaining wall. While we adored our outdoor oasis, we knew we needed a little more space to truly make the most of it.

As we shared on our blog, we decided to rebuild and extend our backyard deck to run the entire length of the back side of our home, seamlessly integrating with the stairs leading to the second level of the yard. Rather than continuing the chevron pattern, we opted to lift up the existing decking and switch things up.

Extending the deck not only allowed us to expand our outdoor living area but also saved us from having to repair the grass every spring. Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There were a few challenges, like building around the curved stone wall (hello, angled edges!) and incorporating integrated stairs into the stone wall. And let’s be real, building a deck is no easy feat – digging those foundation holes and ensuring all the joists are level can really test your patience.

But the end result was worth it. The new, extended deck created a true outdoor oasis, perfect for hosting friends and family or simply kicking back and enjoying the California sunshine. To add even more visual interest, we incorporated raised flower beds and planter boxes on either side of the window well, breaking up the long expanse of beige siding.

Elevating Outdoor Living with Culinary Delights

Of course, no backyard transformation would be complete without a touch of culinary magic. In addition to our deck, we’ve also created an outdoor kitchen area that’s the envy of the neighborhood. A1 Landscape Construction helped us design and build a semi-portable outdoor kitchen, complete with quartz countertops, so my husband can showcase his pizza-making skills.

That’s right, we have a wood-fired pizza oven that my husband built himself! Nothing quite beats the aroma of freshly baked pizza wafting through the air as you sip a cold drink and soak up the California sun. And let’s not forget the all-important BBQ grill and pellet smoker-grill combo – because who doesn’t love a good old-fashioned backyard cookout?

Embracing the Unexpected: Deck Design Challenges and Solutions

As I mentioned, building a deck isn’t all fun and games. There were a few challenges we had to overcome during our backyard transformation. One of the trickiest aspects was navigating the curved stone wall – those angled edges took some serious problem-solving skills.

We also had to figure out how to integrate the stairs leading to the second level of the yard into the deck seamlessly. It was a bit of a puzzle, but with some creative thinking and a lot of elbow grease, we managed to pull it off.

And let’s not forget the sheer physicality of the project. Digging those foundation holes and ensuring all the joists were perfectly level – it was enough to make even the most seasoned DIYer break a sweat. But we powered through, and the end result is a stunning, functional outdoor living space that we can’t wait to enjoy for years to come.

Designing for Delight: Incorporating Personalized Touches

One of the things I’m most proud of is the personalized touches we added to our backyard oasis. Beyond the extended deck and outdoor kitchen, we incorporated raised flower beds and planter boxes on either side of the window well. Not only do they add a pop of color and visual interest, but they also help to break up the long expanse of siding.

And the best part? We extended our irrigation system with drip lines that water the plants automatically, so I can just set it and forget it. Goodbye, hours spent lugging around a hose and watering can!

As we showcased on our blog, we also made sure to stage the entire deck with furniture and plants to create a true outdoor living space. From cozy seating areas to lush greenery, every element works together to transform our backyard into a tranquil oasis.
