As someone who’s constantly trying (and often failing) to keep my own garden thriving, I know how important it is to find little ways to make the space your own. After all, not everything in a garden has to be purely functional – sometimes it’s the fun, personality-packed DIY touches that really bring a space to life. That’s why I was so excited when my friend Mandy, the best gardener I know, asked me to create a custom garden sign for her.
Mandy manages to pack an impressive bounty into just a handful of raised beds, and she’s always happy to share her gardening wisdom with me when I desperately need it. One day, I decided I wanted to make her a little thank-you gift in the form of a cute DIY garden sign. I totally raided my three-year-old son’s stash of wooden letters for the project (he won’t mind, I promise) and got to work.
As I learned, not everything in a garden has to be functional – those little pops of personality can make all the difference. The sign turned out so well that I ended up making a few more, and now I’m hooked. As for the letters, I got super lucky and stumbled upon a huge bag of wooden letters that my son had been playing with. But you can easily find letter sets at any craft store, or you can even cut your own letters out of wood. If you want to get really creative, you can even use permanent markers or paint to customize the letters.
Bringing Your Vision to Life
Once you’ve gathered your materials, the actual construction process is really straightforward. Start by giving your wooden stakes a good scrub to get rid of any excess dirt or grime. Then, lay out your letters to figure out the perfect wording and arrangement. Remember, the possibilities are endless – you can go with a sweet, inspirational message, a playful garden pun, or anything in between.
When you’ve settled on your design, use a strong super glue to attach the letters to the stakes. Make sure to hold each one in place for about a minute to get a good bond. Then, glue the two stakes together, again pressing firmly for 60 seconds. Let the whole thing dry for 24 hours before moving on to the next step.
If you want to get really fancy, you can even turn your garden sign into a mini easel by adding a crosspiece to the bottom of the stakes. This gives you the option to swap out different signs or messages throughout the year.
Weatherproofing and Display
No matter which route you choose, the final step is to protect your creation from the elements. A quick spray of clear coat will help your garden sign hold up to wind, rain, and sun. Just make sure to let it dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Finally, it’s time to find the perfect spot to display your handiwork. Stick the pointy end of the stake firmly into the soil, arranging it so the sign is clearly visible from the path or seating area. And remember, you can always move it around to different locations as the seasons change and your garden evolves.
